Saturday Sampler 2014 - Sew and Tell - Block 12

Welcome to Block #12:  Outdoor Auditorium, from our Saturday Sampler 2014, Sew and Tell Series.

Our block patterns will be posted around the 2nd Saturday of each month, so check back through the year to make all twelve sampler blocks with us.

Need to catch up on Blocks 1-11?  Start HERE.

Our blocks are 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" (12" x 12" finished)

All seam allowances are 1/4".

*This block can be as organized or as scrappy as you wish by using up scraps from other blocks.

L:  (4) 2 3/8” x 2 3/8”

M:  Magenta:
E:  (1) 4 3/16” x 4 3/16”

Cut the (E) Orange and (M) Magenta 4 3/16" squares into quarters diagonally.

Cut the (J) Dark Green, (L) Yellow, and (K) Purple 2 3/8" squares in half diagonally.

Flying Geese Units:  Make four each of two color variations of flying geese.  (K/E and L/M).

Sew a (K) purple triangle to the right side of an (E) orange triangle.
Sew a (L) yellow triangle to the right side of a (M) magenta triangle.

Press towards the purple (yellow) triangle.

Repeat on left side of unit.

Unit should measure 2" x 3 1/2".  Trim unit as shown below.

One of my favorite rulers is the Creative Grids Quick Trim ruler.  See the white diagonal lines that intersect in the middle of the ruler?  They are perfect for trimming up flying geese or square-in-a-square units.

Align the white diagonal lines on the ruler with the edges of the triangles on the flying geese unit.

Notice that the white diagonal lines intersect at the 1/4" line on the ruler.  This will give you a perfect 1/4" seam.  Trim top edge of flying geese unit.

Trim sides of flying geese unit so that it is 3 1/2" wide.

Then trim bottom of flying geese unit so that it is 2" tall.

Repeat to make four of each color way.

Sew one flying geese unit of each color-way together side by side.

Sew a (C) 2” x 3 1/2” grey rectangle to the unit.

Stack the Dark Green and Hot Pink 1 9/16" strips together, right sides up.
Stack the Dark Green and Royal Blue  1 9/16" strips together, right sides up.
Position Template D and Template F on strips as shown below.
Cut around templates.

Templates are shown below.  Save image and print at actual size.  The square on the image should measure 1".  Adjust print size until square measures 1".

Continue cutting a total of 4 templates from each of the strips.

Arrange the (B) Light Grey Triangles, the (I) Medium Green diamonds, and the (J) Dark Green triangles as shown below.  Pay attention to placement of shapes.  You will make four units that slant left and four units that slant right.

Join the Light Green and Dark Green triangles to the light green diamond.

Trim units to 2" x 3 1/2".

Arrange the  (A) Light Grey 2" squares, the (B) Light Grey Triangles, the (D) Royal Blue diamonds and the (F) Hot Pink diamonds as shown below.

Sew the Light Grey triangles to the Royal Blue and Hot Pink diamonds as shown.

Press towards the Light Grey triangles.

Using a mechanical pencil or other marking tool, draw lines on the wrong side of the fabrics, 1/4" from the edge of the shapes as shown below.  Mark a dot where the lines intersect.

Place the Royal Blue section and the Hot Pink section right sides together.  Sew along dotted line indicated below, starting at the dot where the two drawn lines intersect.

Press seam open.

Place the Light Grey square right sides together with the unit created above.  The dot on the grey square should align with the dots on the wrong side of the royal blue/hot pink unit.

Sew along dotted line indicated below, stopping at the dot where the two drawn lines intersect.

Rotate unit so that side of grey square matches up with edge of hot pink diamond.  Sew along dotted line indicated below stopping at the dot.  Make four units.

Arrange units as shown below.

Sew units into sections.

Sew sections together.  Unit should measure 5" x 5".  Make 4 units.

Arrange block units into rows.

Join units into rows.

Join rows together.
